In the surroundings of Pavia this legend has been told since time immemorial: A leader of the Botta Adorno family was murdered by his wife with poison and, since it had not had an immediate effect, ended up with beheading. Just before he died, the nobleman turned his
prayers to God by launching a curse on his relatives and on all the people he had bitterly fought for during the war; his words were heard, probably not by the god he was speaking to. In the years to come a calamity befell that county; people died exhausted by the black plagues and the population was totally decimated, even the nobleman's wife died. There are people who have sworn to have seen a decapitated corpse coming out of the nobleman's tomb riding the wind and dispersing the scourge of disease in order to finally take revenge. For this reason, every year during the month of August around the Castle of Branduzzo at night the corpse of the beheaded still appears, making three laps around the castle on his ghost steed and brandishing a flaming sword to remind everyone of his existence.
