Pile of Rotten Bones talks about another strange situation, at the time the Lombards had conquered all of Italy, placing Pavia as the maximum splendor and choosing it as the capital of the sacred roman empire. Their dynasty went on for years until the last king, Desiderius, fell to Charlemagne's French army during the siege of 773. Obviously the empire could not lose and ended like this, overnight. It is therefore said that King Desiderius somehow managed to cheat death even if he was reported missing; the same fate also befell his soldiers who are still waiting under the castle for his return endowed with the gift of immortality but now reduced to residues of the human beings they were and of the glory that once was, slowly rotting under the old ruins and trying to feed each other while, for eternity, they wait for the return of their commander who can finally lead them once again to glory and conquest.
