Bargniff speaks about a creature that lives on the banks of the river Po; this king of frogs is said to be the size of an ox and will attempt to surprise his victims who try to cross or even stand near the stream. His attitude is very similar to that of the oedipal sphinx with the slight difference of asking riddles that are impossible to answer; in case of wrong answer (therefore always) his punishment follows, that is death by drowning using his powers to create powerful water whirlpools while he calmly feeds on the soul of the victim. The legend (like so many of this type) gives people an answer to the continuous drownings that have occurred over the years in the Po and which, unfortunately, still happen now; in addition it acts as a bogeyman for children, it is the classic plausible excuse to keep them away from those murky and dangerous waters.
